On October 4, 1957, the Soviet Union successfully launched Sputnik 1, the world’s first artificial satellite, into orbit around Earth. The small, spherical spacecraft transmitted radio signals back to Earth and demonstrated that humans could place objects in space.
The launch marked a major milestone in scientific and technological history and is widely regarded as the beginning of the Space Age. It also intensified the Space Race between the Soviet Union and the United States, encouraging rapid advances in rocketry, satellite technology, astronomy, and eventually human spaceflight.
