NASA Begins Operations in 1958
On October 1, 1958, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) officially began operations in the United States. Created in response to the growing space race, NASA was established to coordinate the nation’s civilian space activities and advance research in aeronautics and space exploration.
NASA went on to achieve major milestones, including the Apollo 11 Moon landing in 1969, the development of space shuttles, robotic missions to other planets, and the operation of the International Space Station. Its creation marked the beginning of decades of scientific discovery and human exploration beyond Earth.
