1949: Establishment of the People’s Republic of China
On October 1, 1949, Mao Zedong proclaimed the establishment of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) in Beijing. The declaration followed years of conflict between the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and the Nationalist government (Kuomintang) during the Chinese Civil War.
From the Tiananmen Gate, Mao announced the creation of the new government, marking the Communist Party’s control over mainland China. The Nationalist government, led by Chiang Kai-shek, subsequently retreated to Taiwan, where the Republic of China government continued.
October 1 is now celebrated in China as National Day, commemorating the founding of the People’s Republic of China.
