In 1513, Spanish explorer Vasco Núñez de Balboa crossed the Isthmus of Panama and reached a mountain range from where he became the first European known to see the Pacific Ocean from the Americas. He called it the “South Sea.” His expedition marked an important moment in European exploration because it confirmed the existence of another vast ocean beyond the lands explored by Europeans.
